The Public Service Pensions Fund is mandated to manage and administer pension for government employees with an ultimate objective of providing all pensionable members with a memorable retirement experience.
The Fund offers the following benefits which are dependent on the nature of exit from civil service: Funeral Cover, Death Benefit, Disability Benefit, Normal Retirement Benefit, Resignation Benefit, Early Retirement, Deferred Retirement, Abolition of Office, and Forced Medical Retirement.
It is worth noting that each benefit has its own prerequisite for the Fund to be able to process a member’s payout when exiting. A member can exit their employment service whenever they feel the need to, but it is advisable that when a member is planning to exit, they carefully follow the exit procedures. Exiting properly assists in speeding up the member’s payout from the Fund, where applicable.
Following procedure entails a member rendering their notification letter of the request, which can be Resignation, Early Retirement or Deferred Retirement. The member has to then serve three months’ notice, which is important for the releasing of the Authority from the Ministry of Public Service. The Authority gives the Fund permission to pay out the benefit, which is why it is important for a member to follow all procedures when exiting service.
The Fund has noted the growing trend of members absconding from work only to return to the Fund to request their payout. The Fund is unable to process a member’s payout in this regard without the Authority’s approval. In this instance, a member will be requested to return and liaise with their Ministry to follow the procedure for the issuing of the Authority.
